Avalanche Search and Rescue Level 2 (AvSAR 2) course
Important information : The Avalanche Search and Rescue 2 (AvSAR 2) course replaces the former AvSAR Advanced Skills course. Students who have already completed the Avalanche Operations Level 1 course before 2025 will not be required to take AvSAR 1, and may enroll directly in AvSAR 2. However, they may begin the AvSAR course progression with AvSAR 1, at the student’s discretion.
This course is a prerequisite for the Avalanche Operations Level 2 course. If you have any questions about the changes, please consult the CAA FAQ page.
AvSAR 2 is the second avalanche search and rescue course. The course introduces students to the skills, techniques and leadership strategies of avalanche search and rescue. It is designed for industry professionals who can act as incident commanders at avalanche incidents.
This intensive three-day technical course is essentially taught in the field, with a combination of demonstrations and practical workshops. Students will be required to do a significant amount of reading and quizzing (approx. 20 hours) before the course starts.
This training may also be suitable for snowmobilers if they are able to travel in variable snow conditions and on various terrains using snowshoes/skis/splitboardswhile carrying a backpack. Specific courses for snowmobilers, with travel on snowmobiles, are available in Western Canada in English.
Incident Command System 100 course (ICS 100). The course must be completed and the electronic certificate must be provided as proof of completion. Available online from ICS Canada or the Justice Institute of British Columbia.
Must be 18 years of age or older;
Advanced backcountry skiing orsplitboardingexperience and good physical fitness: able to use alpine touring equipment (bindings, skins and skis/splitboard), able to travel in variable conditions and over diverse terrain (such as deep snow, brittle crust, wind patches and dense trees) while carrying a backpack.
At the end of the course, students should be able to :
Demonstrate the skills of an avalanche rescue leader
Apply advanced search techniques and strategies
Apply advanced rescue techniques
Implement post-accident activities.
Language
The course will be taught in French in Quebec. Readings, exercises, the student manual, and the final exam will be in French. However, some videos or resources presented during the course will be in English only. Bilingual instructors will be available to help you with technical terms and their equivalents in both languages.
Students will receive instructions on how to register for the online pre-course when they register. The online pre-course tasks are compulsory and require an investment of around 20 hours. A percentage of the final AvSAR 2 course grade corresponds to the pre-course quizzes.
A sample timetable for this course gives an idea of how each day will unfold. Course days are long, and it’s the student’s responsibility to take care of his or her personal needs. This includes food, drink, appropriate clothing and making sure you’re well rested and ready to learn. There are no meal breaks. Participants must be prepared to eat and drink throughout the day.
The AvSAR 2 course is a mix of classroom and field learning. Students will alternate between indoors and outdoors each day.
MATERIALS
At the time of registration, an e-mail will be sent to the student with logistical details of the course, announcing times and locations. The detailed list of mandatory equipment describes the essentials for the course. Participants should be familiar with the functions of their avalanche transceiver (ATD) and its basic functions.
Finally, a hard copy of the Search and Rescue 2 (AvSAR 2) manual will be delivered to the student’s mailing address. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the ACA office if he or she has not received this package one month before the start of the course.
ASSESSMENT
Studentassessment is divided into three categories: quizzes on advanced search and rescue concepts taken during the online course, a technical skills sheet and an assessment as a response leader on a large-scale practical scenario. Students will receive marks based on the following criteria: below standard (<70%), standard (70% – 85%) and above standard (86% – 100%). A grade in line with the standard is required to obtain the AvSAR 2 certificate.

This field course enables students to acquire the pedagogical and risk management skills needed to teach recreational courses in simple terrain ("Avalanche Skills Training 1 (AST1)" and "Companion Rescue"). Key objectives include terrain identification, group management and compliance with the Guidelines for Instructing in Avalanche Terrain (GIAT).

Effective verbal communication.

Two types of avalanche safety training courses are offered in Quebec: recreational courses, intended for the public, and professional courses.
Avalanche Québec does not offer any courses, but can help you to see more clearly, according to your objectives, in the range of courses on offer. Avalanche Québec promotes all avalanche training courses offered in Québec by the various independent course providers accredited by Avalanche Canada. The Avalanche Canada training program offers progression from a basic to an advanced level and is the national standard for recreational training. Avalanche Skills Training 1 (AST1)
AST1 is the starting point for those who engage in recreational activities in the backcountry. No experience is necessary to take this two-day course. All members of your group should take AST1, as it is the first step to safe travel in the mountains.

The companion rescue skills training is a 100% hands-on, one-day course designed to equip outdoor enthusiasts with the skills they need in the event of an avalanche accident. Avalanche Skills Training 2 (AST2)
Prerequisites : AST1 & field experience
AST2 provides a decision-making framework for travel in avalanche terrain. Lasting four days, including three in the field, this course is structured around the daily process , which reproduces the same approach as that used by professionals. It has been developed to meet the needs of people with a moderate level of training and experience. In addition, this course introduces prerequisite knowledge for further avalanche training and presents the Canadian Avalanche Association’s professional training program as the accepted industry standard for pursuing advanced training.

A topo map is great, but you can also achieve a higher level of precision by zooming in on the map: you will then switch from the topographic map to the satellite map and access more details. Satellite maps can be downloaded in advance for use outside the cellular network.

Scholarships available
Training to become an avalanche professional comes with a certain financial burden. Fortunately, to reward excellence and encourage the next generation, two scholarships are available specifically for students of the Avalanche Operations Level 1 course in Quebec, and a number of others across the country.
Alexandra Oberson Scholarship
Worth $1,250, the Alexandra Oberson scholarship is awarded to the female graduate with the best cumulative result. It aims to encourage the next generation of women in the snow and avalanche industry.
Avalanche Québec offers internship opportunities for graduates of Canadian Avalanche Association (CAA) professional training programs ? Two options are available: a one-day observation internship and/or a one-day professional internship.
The observation internship allows you to join the Avalanche Québec field team in its daily operations of data collection and avalanche bulletin production. Available on request only, from January to March.
The professional training course is designed to review the skills acquired in the professional courses (Avalanche Operations Level 1 and AvSAR), with a view to maintaining expertise, as suggested by professional and continuing development. Offered on a fixed date several times during the winter. The proposed dates are February 5 and March 5, 2026.
Teaching avalanche safety courses, both recreational and professional, is an exciting and accessible career opportunity. Since these courses are run by two separate organizations, the criteria and procedures for each level differ. Here are some details:
Recreational level courses
To become an instructor for recreational courses developed and standardized by Avalanche Canada, three steps are required:

Pick-up
All products purchased through the Website may be picked up free of charge at our office located at 900 Route du Parc, Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, Quebec, G4V 2E3. To set up a pick-up, proceed as follows: Confirm the availability of the product by visiting our on-line store, complete your purchase by paying for your order on our Website, select the « Pick-Up » option, wait until you receive a confirmation e-mail, and dial 1 (418) 763-5315 in order to set a date and time for the pick-up.
Delivery
Products purchased through the Website may only be shipped to destinations located within Canada or the United States. Shipping costs will be estimated based on the delivery address and will be calculated once your order has been validated. You are solely and entirely responsible for the payment of the delivery and reshipping fees.
Although AVALANCHE will use its best commercial efforts to ship the products as quickly as possible, delivery deadlines are provided for reference only. All products will be delivered by third party shipping partners who might, on occasions, encounter difficulties over which we have no reasonable control. We thank you in advance for your understanding and patience.
AVALANCHE shall not be held liable for (i) any loss, damage, cost, charge, or expense arising from a delayed delivery, or (ii) orders that cannot be delivered or received because the delivery address you provided is inaccurate. Returns and Exchanges
You may return or exchange a product within fourteen (14) days of purchase. To do so, return the product in person or by regular mail to our office located at 900 Route du Parc, Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, Quebec, G4V 2E3.
It is crucial that the merchandise be in perfect condition, i.e. be unused, unworn, unwashed, in its original packaging, and still fitted with all original tags. Whether you return or exchange the product in person or by mail, you must include printed evidence of purchase and payment. We will refund the purchase price to your credit card or exchange the product for another one of your choosing, as the case may be. The obligations you contracted under these General Terms, including those pertaining to indemnification, limited liability and Intellectual Property Assets, shall continue to apply and bind you regardless of any termination of said General Terms.
Upon termination of these General Terms for any reason, (a) AVALANCHE will no longer allow you to access the Website; (b) you shall no longer use the Website; and (c) AVALANCHE may continue to store, use, and disclose your personal information in accordance with the provisions found herein, the Privacy Policy, and all applicable laws and regulations.
If AVALANCHE’s performance of any of its obligations hereunder, or under the order confirmation, is delayed due to force majeure or any other reason beyond AVALANCHE’s control (including disruption or total or partial strike of, among others, postal services, means of transport and/or communications), then the date of performance shall be delayed for the duration of the delay. AVALANCHE shall not be held responsible for the non-performance of such obligations in case of force majeure or any other reason beyond its control.
As these General Terms represent and stand as the whole agreement you have entered into with AVALANCHE, they shall have precedence over any and all prior or contradictory, written or verbal accords, statements, commitments, undertakings, arrangements, conditions, or warranties (including, without limitation, any and all prior iterations of these General Terms). The commitments, undertakings, arrangements, conditions, and warranties stipulated herein shall inure to the benefit of and be binding upon both parties and their respective successors, heirs, trustees, assigns and other legal representatives.
The invalidity or unenforceability of any provision of the General Terms or its unenforceability against any person or circumstance for any reason shall not affect the validity of the remaining provisions of the General Terms. Any ambiguity in the interpretation of these General Terms shall not be construed against the writer.
Failure to enforce any provision of these Terms and Conditions shall not constitute a waiver of the right to enforce the provision in the future or any other provision hereof.
These General Terms and any access to or use of the Website are governed by the laws and regulations applicable in the province of Quebec and those in force in Canada and in your province of residence. Where international laws may apply, or where there is a conflict with other applicable laws in certain jurisdictions, the issue at hand will be governed by the applicable laws. The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods does not apply to these General Terms or to the activities contemplated by them.
Any disagreement, dispute, or claim (i) directed against AVALANCHE and/or its employees, agents, or affiliates, or (ii) pertaining in any way to these General Terms, the content of the Website, your access to or use of the Website, or any order placed by means of the Website shall be referred to the exclusive jurisdiction and competence of the civil courts sitting within the province of Québec.

A topo map is great, but you can also achieve a higher level of precision by zooming in on the map: you will then switch from the topographic map to the satellite map and access more details. Satellite maps can be downloaded in advance for use outside the cellular network.
